ChatGPT MCP on Windows: Custom Connector Guide
In short: ChatGPT can use external tools through custom MCP connectors, enabled with developer mode. It only accepts remote servers over HTTPS: a local MCP server started from the command line is not enough. MCP DeskManager is already a remote server, with an encrypted tunnel and authentication built in, so the address it gives you pastes straight into ChatGPT.
What you need
- A PC running Windows 10 or 11, on and online, with MCP DeskManager installed.
- A ChatGPT account on a plan that allows developer mode and custom connectors. In company workspaces an admin may need to enable it.
Connecting the PC, step by step
- On the PC copy the tunnel address DeskManager shows you.
- In ChatGPT open Settings and switch on developer mode. OpenAI has moved this toggle several times: it is usually in the apps and connectors section, under the advanced options.
- In the connectors section choose Create (or add a custom connector), give it a name and a clear description, for example “My Windows PC: files, terminal, browser and programs”. ChatGPT reads the description to decide when to use it.
- Paste the address, pick OAuth authentication and approve the authorization.
- In a new chat select the connector from the tools menu and write what you want done.
What ChatGPT can do on your PC
The same tools Claude uses: PowerShell and CMD terminal, files with versions, a dedicated Chrome or your real Chrome through the Browser Bridge extension, Windows programs, email, monitoring and screenshots. The same PC can be connected to ChatGPT and Claude at the same time, each with its own key.
What to watch out for
In developer mode ChatGPT can take actions that change things, not just read them. Read the confirmations it proposes before approving. DeskManager adds its own safeguards: permanent deletions, process kills and elevated commands ask for confirmation, normal deletions go to the Recycle Bin, and you can switch off ChatGPT's key at any time without touching other assistants.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a local MCP server with ChatGPT?
No: ChatGPT only connects to servers reachable over HTTPS from the internet. You need a remote server or a tunnel, which DeskManager creates by itself.
Does it work from the ChatGPT phone app?
The connector belongs to your account: once created, you use it wherever your version of ChatGPT makes connectors available.
Give ChatGPT hands on your PC. Ten-minute setup, tunnel included.
